Brooklyn Commune

Newly opened Brooklyn Commune was teeming with toddlers and their harried parents on their first Saturday opened. A lovely corner space on Prospect and Greenwood Avenues, the spot fills some sort of need for a cafe/market for locals. Having some local mission in mind- their appears to be house made jams and granolas as well as a nice selection of salads and sandys. I went with the BLT(pictured) for $8 which features sugar glazed bacon, avocado and tomato with tomato jam on grilled country bread along with a few taro chips and some steamed yellow wax beans. The bacon on the sandy(not cooked to order) was tasty though the tomatoes were mealy and underripe which ruined the sandy's texture. The house mixed chocolate which went into the hot chocolate($2.50) was dastardly good- rich, dark and lovely and not to be missed. Other items like breads(TomCat and Orwarshers) and cookies(Amy's) are imported. If you want to relax- skip the prime times as waits for food can be lengthy as well as the noise levels from lots of kids can be daunting.

Bussaco

Big, beautiful Brooklyn space sans the Park Slope stroller set, Busacco for brunch was great. Soaring space with black booths in back, I was seated at one of the spacious booths as the spot was not full thankfully on Sunday. The brunch menu rocks with a $15 prix fixe which includes a mimosa and coffee. Brunchy items like Swedish pancakes with ligonberries as well as breakfast pizza with potato, egg and choice of meat and the unusual dim sum for one which bacon, eggs, sticky rice, shrimp dumplings and sausage. I went for one of two lunch items which included a cheeseburger with Vermont cheddar or fried poisson and waffles. The fried chicken and waffles was perfection. Small in size though high in quality, the chicken was crispy, perfectly cooked and salty which enhanced the skin and juicy meat of the chen. A properly well cooked waffle with apple butter balanced out the savory chicken and the collard greens added a little vegetable action to the mix. A rich hot chocolate served in a glass was a nice compliment to the meal. Next time, the Spanish tango sundae with Il Laboratorio chocolate ice-cream, hot fudge and peanuts is a must.

Little D Eatery

Little D Restaurant bills itself as a meze restaurant and that is just what it is. A smallish non- descript South Slope spot with a garden in rear serving small plates. I have eaten here for both lunch and dinner and always found the food very tasty and the staff friendly. I ate here for brunch this weekend and had a fantastic Turkish breakfast. My breaky included a hard-boiled egg, house made bread, Turkish cheese, olives, nice red tomatoes, cukes, and house made preserves. WOW! Very fresh ingredients cut up on one plate and delicious bread with rosemary as well as blueberry and orange preserves created the ultimate savory-sweet Mediteranian style meal. The cheese was feta-like though firmer. All this for $9. bucks. All the eggs dishes served are made with eggs from cage free hens. Both the eggs and pork are from NYS farms. Other dishes like Pork Butt Hash and scrambled eggs with biscuits sound extra hearty. Sweeter fare like Big apple pancakes with cinamon butter and NY maple syrup sound yummy too. The brunch menu includes a few dinner items like a small or large size Mac and cheese with cheddar, parmesan, gruyere and breadcrumbs as well as the arugula and butternut squash salad. Next meal there I am primed to try the caramel bread pudding with roasted pecans hopefully in the garden on a warm day.
